ePulse® Condition Assessment
Non-invasive acoustic condition assessment that measures actual pipe wall thickness, detects leaks simultaneously, and gives water utilities the data they need to replace the right pipes at the right time, without digging, without disrupting service.
Replacing pipes without condition data is costing utilities millions
-
1Up to 70% of pipes replaced based on age or break history are in good to moderate condition, with years of life remaining
-
2Pipes that truly need replacement are often left in the ground, driving up break rates and water loss
-
3With replacement costs of $1M to $2M per mile, replacing the wrong pipe is not an inefficiency, it is a significant, avoidable loss
Direct Measurement. Actionable Data. No Disruption.
Acoustic sensors are attached to existing contact points, such as fire hydrants, valves or directly in contact with a pipe. A sound wave is induced in the pipeline and travels along the pipe. The acoustic sensors capture the time it takes the sound wave to travel between two sensor stations. The wave speed reflects actual pipe wall stiffness, producing a quantitative measure of remaining wall thickness and an estimated remaining service life for each tested segment.
- Non-invasive: nothing enters the pipe, no risk to water quality
- Non-disruptive: no flow changes, pressure reductions, or service interruptions
- Simultaneous leak detection included as part of every survey
- Results delivered as a clear condition grade: good, moderate, or poor, with remaining service life estimates
- Available in Standard (200 to 700 ft segments) and Detailed (30 to 90 ft segments) levels of inspection
Key Benefits of ePulse Condition Assesment
Replace the Right Pipes
Make replacement decisions based on actual measured wall thickness, not estimates. Know exactly which pipes need immediate action and which can serve your network for decades more.
Stretch Your Capital Budget
At less than 5% of pipe replacement cost, ePulse consistently delivers net savings. Multiple utilities have deferred 30 to 60% of planned replacement after condition data showed pipes were in better shape than age models predicted. These replacement funds have been reallocated to where it is needed the most (other parts of the network, other pipes, etc.) or enabled utilities to make more effective replacement decisions in shrinking budget environments.
Detect Leaks in the Same Survey
Condition data and leak data in a single mobilization. No separate inspections, no additional scheduling, no additional cost.
Trusted by Leading Utilities Across North America
City of Edina, MN
Cut a planned $800K–$1M replacement project by 50% after ePulse data showed only one-third of the pipe needed replacement.
Las Vegas Valley Water District
Replaced 2,500 ft instead of three miles after ePulse confirmed the remaining pipe was still serviceable.
